Flora went to bed that evening feeling depressed. She hated to see Jack hurt and suspected he’d broken ribs from which it would take weeks to recover fully. There was a nagging sense that he was hurting far too much for far too little. What he’d discovered in London was interesting, but it hardly took them much further.

At first sight, Mason’s need for security guards at his house was unusual, but he was a wealthy man and it was possible that his safety, or his family’s, had been threatened. As for the information on Rafferty, it added to their picture of the man, but little more. They already knew he’d been summarily dismissed for theft – or embezzlement, she wasn’t sure which – but how important was it that he hadn’t been well-liked, that the store’s female staff had been extremely wary of him? And Mrs Mason’s car accident? If Jack’s colleague agreed to help, it might prove worth pursuing, but then again it might not. All in all, it felt to Flora that time, effort and a good deal of distress had been spent on moving barely an inch forward. She would have to do better tomorrow.
